EThekwini water officials say residents have no reason to be sceptical of plans to recycle sewage water into drinking water, as the process is completely safe.
The municipality is calling on residents to share their views on the proposal as only a few people have commented so far.
The project will see water at KwaMashu and the Northern sewage works being disinfected and purified.
Durban would then become the first city in South Africa to use the method. Windhoek in Namibia has been recycling water this way for 42 years without any incidents.
The municipality’s Speedy Moodliar says if the city doesn’t go ahead with the project – it could lead to water restrictions in the future when there’s less than average rainfall.
“The technology used will be technology which will produce a very high quality of potable water. Between now and 2024 when the proposed Umkomasi Dam may be commissioned, the recycled water will inject about 100 megalitres per day into our system,” he said.
