Lungisani Ngidi started his school career at a local government school, where he played cricket, but could not bat because he did not have his own playing kit. His natural sporting ability soon became apparent and he was offered a full scholarship to Highbury in Grade 6.
Richard Stanley, Highbury’s Headmaster, saw something special in Ngidi. “He was an extremely positive young lad who stood out from the crowd in his own unique way.”
Head of House, Hilton College
Being at Highbury exposed Lungisani to cricket at a much higher level and allowed him to develop his talent. He received his first playing kit in Grade 7 and made the KZN U13A cricket team.
Ngidi moved on to Hilton College on a full sports scholarship, achieving success on the sports field and consequently being selected for the SA U19 side.
Mike Mill, previous Housemaster of Newnham House, says this about Ngidi: “His gentlemanly qualities earned him both the friendship and respect of his peers and senior members of the House. It is, therefore, fitting that he has been chosen to lead the House in his matric year.”
What does Lungi have to say about his experience? “Have a dream, always do your best and if you do happen to make it, stay humble and don’t forget the people who helped you get where you are.”
