With the winter chill starting to bite in many parts of South Africa, The Salvation Army is appealing to the public to donate blankets and clothing to help the needy and homeless.
Every winter, the organisation receives thousands of appeals for assistance to ward off the cold. Through the generous support of the public, it is able to assist the needy through its many social outreach programmes.
These include soup kitchens, street children’s homes, social centres, and day care centres for the elderly.
Members of the public can assist by donating blankets or warm clothing, which they can take to their local corps (church) or divisional headquarters in their region. In the mid-KwaZulu-Natal region, divisional headquarters is situated at 54 Oribi Road, Scottsville, telephone 033 386 3881.
Alternatively, the public can contribute financially by sending an SMS with the word BLANKET or WINTER to 42290 to donate R30 towards this cause.
Major Carin Holmes, Public Relations Secretary for The Salvation Army, says: “Winter is a time when the cold reminds those who have sufficient that they are invited to share with those who are in need. Every year, we are astounded at the generosity of the sharing public, and we are sure that this winter will be no exception.”
