National Feral Cat Day, conceived in 2001, is observed annually on 16 October. The aim of the day is to raise awareness about stray and feral cats and the need to trap and sterilize them in order to reduce the number of abandoned and unwanted kittens. The campaign also recognises the millions of people and organisations worldwide that care, manage and feed feral, stray and abandoned cats.
It is for this reason that Compass Cares, the corporate social investment arm of Compass Medical Waste Services, chose to launch their Cats of Durban 2019 ‘Working Cats’ calendar on this day. All proceeds from the calendar are donated to NPO Cats of Durban whose sole purpose is to sterilise stray and feral cats and, in turn, reduce the number of abandoned and unwanted kittens.
The theme of the 2019 calendar is ‘Working Cats’ with motivational quotes, focussed on working together and teamwork, featuring on each page. Photographer, Brendan Bromfield, has portrayed stray cats who have found their homes at schools, businesses and retail outlets. They have become part of the organisations which they have ‘adopted’ and are now loved and adored by staff, customers, suppliers and visitors, alike.
Every R500 raised from the sale of these beautiful calendars it pays for the sterilisation of one cat, which prevents 2 000 unwanted kittens from being born within four years. This in turn prevents 2 million unwanted kittens over an eight year period.
