Durban Girls’ College is known for being a top swimming and Water Polo school and has for many years produced outstanding swimmers. Apart from having another impressive inter-schools swimming and Water Polo season, College has recently gained national recognition for swimming, and international recognition for Water Polo.
College pupils Zoë Frank and Alice Edward represented their province for Open Water Swimming in their respective age groups, along with past pupils, Robyn Kinghorn and Sasha-Lee Nordegen-Corris. Emma Herbert and Bulelwa Mzimela, both current pupils, are South African Water Polo representatives.
The Durban Girls’ College High School girls swam with heart and pride at the D&D Gala at Kings Park on 28 February. Durban Girls’ College lost to Our Lady of Fatima by an incredible 3 points, coming in second place overall. The College girls showed tremendous spirit and determination, making their school proud once again.
Zoë Frank, Alice Edward, Robyn Kinghorn and Sasha-Lee Nordegen-Corris represented their province at the SA National Open Water Championships 2018, held at Marina Martinique in Jeffreys Bay, Port Elizabeth, on 2 and 3 March. Durban Girls’ College is very proud that these current pupils and Old Girls had the opportunity to swim at this tournament. Out of a total of 9 KZN team members, 4 of them are from College!
Durban Girls’ College applauds Emma Herbert for being selected to play Water Polo in the FINA U18 African Qualifiers at Kings Park, Durban, from 8 – 10 March. Emma captained the SA U18 side at the African Qualifiers for 3 matches. This same team played in the Women’s Section of the Water Polo Currie Cup from 4 – 8 April in Johannesburg, coming 6th out of 8 teams. The SA U18 team to compete at the World Championships in Serbia, taking place on 27 August, will soon be announced. Emma has also recently been selected for the Ladies KZN Water Polo Team. Durban Girls’ College commends Emma on her impressive Water Polo performance.
Bulelwa Mzimela, Grade 10, participated in the Water Polo Currie Cup, receiving a bronze medal. Bulelwa will be representing South Africa at the end of March in the U17 EU Nations Water Polo Tournament in the Czech Republic. Durban Girls’ College wishes Bulelwa the best of luck and will be rooting for her and her team.
Giulia Torino, Grade 11, Roxanne Thornton, Grade 10, Jessica McCarthy, Grade 9, and Kathleen Jarvis, Grade 8, have recently been selected for the KZN Level 3 Artistic Swimming Team that will compete at the South African Youth and Senior Aquatic Nationals in Port Elizabeth from 18 – 22 April. Durban Girls’ College is very proud of these girls and wishes them well for this competition.
