Spoilt for choice

By The Crest Magazine30/11/20173 Mins Read

After years of relative quiet on the local restaurant scene, the Upper Highway has seen a burst of activity, with exciting new additions, including popular franchises and unique local eateries

For many years, favourites like Oscars, Spriggs, Lupa and Bellevue Cafe have kept food-lovers satisfied, with their strong brand identities and consistent quality. However, all too often, local diners were left frustrated with the lack of options.

No longer! 2017 seems to be the year of the restaurant, with a burgeoning food scene that offers something for all tastes, from Italian to Indian, Greek to Vegan.

If you’re looking for something a bit special, Butlers in Hillcrest offers a mix of classic and modern flavours, expertly composed by Chef Deon Kemp, who wowed judges at the 2017 Unilever Chef of the Year competition, coming second in SA. Stretta, too, has a loyal following, with diners choosing the laid-back eatery for anything from breakfast to a special celebration. Down the road, in Kloof, 1904 has been making waves for its luxurious decor and American bistro-inspired menu, attracting visitors from near and far. And don’t forget Lupa for an exceptional dining experience, inspired by the best of Roma.

The Kitchen at Cotswold offers a breath of fresh air, with casual dining in a beautiful setting and a special twist on familiar dishes. Kloof Country Club has also revamped its offering, with fabulous deals and a family-friendly atmosphere. Classique Braai Lounge brings traditional Zulu flavours to the fore, with a cocktail menu that’s sure to get the party started.

Mozambik at the Junction on Inanda in Hillcrest has recently been refurbished, with a sleek new glass frontage. “We have been serving Afro-Porto cuisine in Hillcrest since 2011 and look forward to sharing our new look with diners,” says restaurant operator Braddon Ayerst.

We can be very proud of our local coffee scene, which offers a range of sit down and grab-and-go options, many offering exceptional quality. Whether you’re after an award-winning brew from Craig Charity and his team at Lineage or a kick-starter capp from Analog at the Oxford Village, there’s a cafe for every occasion.

Lovers of a civilised brunch, lunch or tea have long acclaimed Two Acres Tea Room (near Busamed Hillcrest Private Hospital), Treat Café at Talloula (Did I hear you say lemon meringue?) and Madeleines at the Oxford Village (where you can watch their decadent creations being made).

While we have never been blessed with a wide range of child-friendly options, they are there and awareness seems to be growing, with new additions including Bona Terra and Go Fresh Café on Kassier Road.

There are many more fabulous foodie destinations to explore, but we don’t have space to mention them all. You’ll find inspiration for your next meal in our special restaurant directory, which follows. Be sure to save it for future reference and, most importantly, happy feasting!
