On Friday evening, a collision between a minibus taxi and a truck on the N2 highway in the vicinity of the Westwood Mall caused two lanes of the highway to be closed, resulting in a traffic jam as far back as Umgeni Road.
The collision occurred when the minibus taxi allegedly tried to overtake a truck and crashed at high speed into the back of another truck in the left lane.
ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene to find the only occupant of the taxi, the driver, trapped in the front of the vehicle. Local fire and rescue services used specialised rescue equipment to cut away pieces of the wreckage to free him.
The man, believed to be in his forties, sustained severe injuries to his lower extremities and was treated at the scene before being transported to a nearby medical facility.
