How many people do you know who own a BlackBerry? Or an iPhone? Because PLENTY South Africans now have one, and those who don’t have a Blackberry want one (or an iPhone, or a Samsung Touch) . . or a new laptop, tablet, reader, or any of countless new gizmos on the market…
The amazing aspect of owning a BlackBerry, is that it keeps you connected to the world . . . constantly, with BBM –BlackBerry Messenger being the most appealing application. There really is no respite, unless you’re extremely disciplined. People are glued to their small screens answering work e-mails routed to their phones at 10pm at night, when they should be unwinding.
One of the other attractions is that your Blackberry internet (BIS) only costs around R60 rand a month, and gives you unlimited access to the internet, apart from streaming media.
BlackBerrys do not only reach out to the older target market and businessmen and women, as a work phone where you receive e-mails immediately, but also to the youth market, who want to be able to chat to their mates. That’s where Facebook, Twitter, Mxit, Whatsapp and BBM come into play, and when none of those applications are buzzing away, then there is always texting and phoning.
BlackBerrys and other smartphones are not, however, the only culprits taking over people’s lives, but when you’re over your phone, why not jump in front of your laptop and do some browsing, maybe surf the net, or do some Facebook chatting. Which, by the way, is just another brilliant application you can now download to your BlackBerry.
Sleek little number
Or there is always the I-pad, which is today 33% thinner and 15% percent lighter than the original I-pad 1. This little gadget can make video calls, take photos, surf the net, check e-mails, play movies and even read books. And let’s not forget all those amazing Apps you can download from the App store, or from countless vendors on the internet.
The love affair with all this new technology seems to be growing by the day, changing lives and perhaps taking over the space and influencing personal relationships of those who buy all these amazing gadgets.
Are we glad . . . or sad, though? That’s the question. Just text, SMS, BBM, e-mail or Facebook me your answer. – Danielle Sheedy
