I have to admit that I have never seen an adult panto before. I know it’s a Durban tradition, but last night was a first for me. I am here to tell you that if you have a conservative nature, then this is not the show for you. I do not, and I have rarely laughed so much or so hard.
Dorothy, ‘call me Dottie’ is a little farm girl from Unkomaas, and she embodies every South Coast joke you have ever heard. Dressed in Dorothy’s blue gingham but with a red sparkly bra and tassels, she makes quite an impression. The cast is small, but perfect.
I enjoyed every performance, but Cobus Van Heerden as the cowardly lion was a tour de force, honestly, he owned the stage. The wonderful legs of Anthony Stonier as the Wicked Witch of Sibaya North Coast could have stolen the show by themselves, but the rest of him looked just as lovely and his musical direction was spot on. Donnagh Roberts was a memorable Dorothy, her cleavage will be etched on the minds of many for some time to come, and the whole evening was fabulous.
I am delighted that I have seen it so early in the run, it will be there until January, and if you want something to lift your mood this will do the trick. Take your most amusing friends, take a picnic, and clap along to the Yellow Brick Road, it did me the world of good.
