Dance lovers young and old can expect a wide variety of dance classes and workshops during the Jomba! Contemporary Dance Experience which takes place at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre at UKZN from Thursday 28 August to Sunday 8 September.
The most popular fringe, the Jomba! Youth Fringe (under 16 years of age) will take place at the Cato Manor in the Wiggins Community Hall on Saturday 31 August at 2:30pm.
This year’s youth fringe will feature works by many of Durban’s dance development programmes from no less than twenty groups of young dancers from KZN.
Jomba! Fringe is an open performance platform, providing up-and-coming choreographers with the opportunity to present their work in a professional environment with the backing of a full technical team.
Participants are selected by a panel of experts and preference is given to choreographers who have already made at least one work in the idiom of contemporary dance.
Jomba! Fringe will take place on Sunday 1 September at 7:30pm.
This year’s choreographers consist of a selection of KwaZulu-Natal based choreographers, including Durban’s 031 Floor Assassins, Sifiso ‘Kitsona’ Khumalo from the Flatfoot Training Company, UKZN Howard College student Caitlin Perkins, and University of Zululand student Zakhele Ndlovu among others.
There will also be free Jomba! Dance and Choreography workshops open to members of the public over the age of 16 held from Saturday 24 August until Thursday 5 September.
While the workshops are free of charge, booking is essential as there are limited places available. To book, contact 082 875 6065 or send an email to jombafestival@gmail.com.
Dates and times for the workshops are available on the Centre for Creative Arts website.
