Returning to a familiar home, The Keg once again became a Durban North regular when the flagship Keg & Thistle Pub opened at the Glenore Centre in Glenashley at the end of April
Well-known Durban businessman and original founder of The Keg, Derryck Myers first opened the Keg & Thistle on Florida Road in August 1990, and is thrilled to be bringing back this experience.
“It has been 23 years since we first launched the Keg & Thistle, and are really looking forward to bringing back the great food, beers from every corner of the world, superb service and an ambience that you would leave home for,” said Derryck.
Proud to be linked to Famous Brands, Derryck believes that under the leadership of former Keg Franchising (Pty) Ltd CEO Kevin Hedderwick, the brand has grown exponentially.
“With the experience of Famous Brands and the fact that our new Keg will be one of three in the country to boast new styling and design, we are confident that it will be an attribute to the centre and the area as a whole,” Derryck said.
The Keg & Thistle will bring new life to the space occupied by Livingstone’s that after a hugely successful run closed its doors at the beginning of April.
“While it was sad to see the gastro-pub style of Livingstone’s come to an end, we are so excited that chef Chris Glock will be coming into the Keg & Thistle as chef, joint GM and partner and that some of his gourmet creations, like the Crown Jewel Rib-Eye, will become Keg specials,” said Derryck, who also owned Livingstone’s.
These specials will be part of the menu offering on the “The Publican’s Board”, where the chef is able to express his exceptional talents. This board compliments the pub menu, which is proudly based on the most typical of English pub meals that are renowned throughout the Keg group.
Home-style Burgers, Homemade KEG Pies and Pub Classics like Steak, Egg & Chips and Bangers & Mash are just a few of the tasty options on offer.
“I am super amped to be part of the new Keg & Thistle. Cold beers and hot legendary pies, what a mean combination. From Pie Man of the North to Publican of the North … what could be more super than that!” said Chris.
The man at the front of the store, is typical Irish publican Alan Jordan, who is joint GM and partner in the business. “It is such a proud feeling not only to be part of the Keg brand, but to be working with its originators.

With the Keg being the pioneer of the authentic English Pub experience in South Africa, the iconic Pint Glasses, Beers on Tap, and drinks specials will ensure a typical Keg experience.
From their “Thirst Things First”, “Drink Your Way Around The World” to the “Cocktail Cruise” menu and the wide selection of wines, spirits and liqueurs, patrons will be able to spend a “lifetime” just tasting and experiencing all the new generation Keg and Thistle has to offer.
