When asked about the Italian lifestyle, many think of pasta or pizza. But the real Italian would say olive oil, pasta, parmigiano, prosciutto crudo or parma ham. L’edicola Today’s concept is to keep the artisanal, the traditional, the old-school Italian mamma’s way, but with a modern, contemporary twist. At L’edicola clients must feel as if they’re sitting out in the piazza enjoying an espresso coffee, a traditional breakfast or contemporary panini.
L’edicola originally started in the 70s as a small store selling Italian newspapers and magazines and limited Italian foodstuffs off St Josephs and Broad Streets in Durban. It later moved into Durdoc Centre then Cowie Road where the deli section emerged, before moving north to Ballito where it evolved into a small retail store.
Today L’edicola is a testament to Italian traditions and culture, offering authentic imported and local Italian products and ingredients direct to its customers at wholesale, affordable prices.
Roberto Reigl, a young entrepreneur, grew up wanting to own his own business. When he heard that L’edicola was closing in Ballito, he purchased the entity with the view of rebranding and creating a new and inviting store within an owned structure within uMhlanga Ridge. After careful consideration, mentorship and inspiration by his father Luigi, Roberto eventually opened L’edicola Today in Outlet Park, with the objective of continuing with the legacy already established.
L’edicola Today provides traditional artisanal and contemporary foods, so the public can experience true Italian fare – whether it be freshly sliced mouth-watering cold meats, parma prosciutto, salme Napoli, pancetta spec or a variety of cheeses – provolone, Caciocavallo mozzarella or fiore di latte, buffalo balls – along with a selection of quality pasta and salsa sauces or Italian chocolates and sweets.
