On February 20 local learners had great fun out-dressing each other in a bid to grab attention to highlight the plight of our children by wearing toxically-luminous hues and masks. Lessons on the day centred around understanding pollution and the need to recycle.
To create awareness of the toxic situation with which our local community is faced, Hillcrest Primary and Winston Park Primary both supported the #SaveOurChildren fund by having a civvies day, and successfully raised over R20 000 for the initiative.
#SOC is currently working with more than 10 schools from Shongweni, Dassenhoek and KwaNdengezi, where children will be drawing their experiences of the hazardous landfill in picture form. #SOC aims to collect 10 000 children’s pictures and will continue to work on initiatives to assist the communities closest to the landfill, who are otherwise without access to the necessary means to have their voices heard.*To get involved visit www.saveourchildren.co.za
