A whopping R1.47-million rand was pledged during East Coast Radio’s Toy Story Corporate Day with Game on Friday. This figure is almost three times the amount raised at last year’s event.

The generous people of KwaZulu-Natal – big businesses, entrepreneurs and individuals alike – made pledges during the 12 hour telethon at Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World. Celebrities – including the artists from the massively popular Locnville and The Arrows – manned the phone lines as calls came flooding through. Sharks player Ryan Kankowski, comedian Beauty Ramapelepele, former Springbok Mark Andrews and R&B singer Mario Ogle also volunteered an hour of their time.
Most of the pledges came in the form of cash which will buy around 2 700 food parcels that’ll be distributed to child-headed households and families in need across the province. These parcels are nutritiously designed for children who’re affected by the scourge of HIV/AIDS and can feed a family of five for approximately four to six weeks.
As the sponsor, Game also surprised East Coast Radio by having collected R400 000 in toys from their suppliers and staff. These will go a long way towards matching the 45 000 toys that were handed out to children at government hospitals, crèches, orphanages and child-headed households last year.
ECR Marketing Manager Andile Mkhize says, “The generous people of KwaZulu-Natal have not only put smiles on the faces of thousands of children, but have helped them start a news story.”
