August 18, 2011. The Umhlanga UIP has taken bold action to counter the potential impacts of rampaging strikers, and has implemented a contingency plan, effective today, with specific measures to counter the municipal strike and litter left on the streets.
According to Brian Wright, Umhlanga UIP Project leader, Umhlanga’s public areas will remain clean with litter bags removed.
Action plan:
1. Marine Dr and Village roads including the taxi rank
a. Cleaning will commence daily at 6am which will include the promenade UIP team – target time for completion 7.30am
b. Skeleton staff will be on duty until 6pm
2. Promenade
a. Morning cleaning which starts at 6am will be delayed until 8am to assist with Marine Dr and the Village cleaning
b. Staff will be on duty until 3pm week days and 6pm on weekends
3. Collection of bags
a. UIP has arrange a trailer – public area bags will be uplifted every morning and afternoon from both the Village and Promenade
b. Parks Dept have provided a dumping skip for uplifted bags outside of the precinct to prevent trashing
c. Replacement bin bags have been provided by the municipality
4. Trashing of Umhlanga
a. The above plan will ensure that there is no build up of waste bags – this will significantly reduce the mess if the striking workers trash Umhlanga
b. If trashing by municipal strikers does occur, the UIP will immediately begin the clean up once the strikers have left the area
5. Municipal senior DSW (municipal cleaning dept.) management
a. Have agreed to forewarn the UIP if there is a threat to intimidation of UIP staff – the plan above is structure to reduce this possibility
b. Are not able to provide any details on the length of the strike
