Despite struggling to emerge from a crippling recession in 2008, there’s been a surge in hospitality industry construction and completion of venues in the past year. Recession? What recession, you might ask? Not in this town.
Some of the venues recently completed or under construction include The Holiday Inn Express Umhlanga, the huge Docklands Hotel on Umhlanga Rocks Drive, the Square Boutique Hotel and Spa, Protea Hotel Umhlanga Ridge near Gateway and the Garden Court Umhlanga (Southern Sun).
Business property is also going up at a rate of knots, with Ridgeside leading the way. According to the Ridgeside Umhlanga Ridge website, “The office park brings 100 000m² of prime sea view office accommodation on to the market following the success of the La Lucia Ridge Office Estate.”
Included among corporates leading the move to Ridgeside are Investec, Vodacom and Liberty Life. Construction of roads, infrastructure and the interchange to the R41 are in the final stages and the sea views down to the ocean are the best bar none.
All this, along with developments such as the King Shaka International Airport and Dube Tradeport, and the growth and expansion at Ballito, helps to boost confidence and investment in the area, and confirms the coastal areas north of Durban as THE place to be.
