Durban North campus marches to protect mangroves
On Saturday, September 4, Varsity College Durban North hosts a Beach Walk in aid of Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve and the North Durban Honorary Officers.
Polish off your walking shoes, get your friends and family together and get walking for a good cause.
The Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve is used as a nature conservation education centre. The reserve spans 76ha, has the largest population of mangrove trees in the Durban area and is situated on the north banks of the Umgeni River. It is monitored by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife staff as well as the volunteer group, the North Durban Honorary Officers, who are also responsible for educating the public about the wonders of the mangroves and the importance of environmental conservation.
The walk will start at Virginia Beach and end at the Mangroves Reserve. Parking will be available at the Mangroves and shuttles have been organised to transport walkers to the start. The colour scheme for the walk is white. The entry fee is R35 and the shuttle tickets cost a further R5. Spot prizes will be awarded to the best dressed and most enthusiastic walkers as well as to the first person across the finish line.
