Durban July fever sets in

By The Ridge Magazine07/06/20114 Mins Read

To be run this year in its traditional slot on the first weekend of July, excitement is already building ahead of the Vodacom Durban July. The race will be run on July 2 at Greyville racecourse.

It’s a day for Durban’s beautiful people and the fashionistas . . . as many thousands turn out in their finery, hoping to show off a little and live like a prince or a princess, even if just for one day.

In the picture: Kim Campbell and Stefanie Windisch having a blast at the Miller’s tent at the 2010 July.

But let’s also not forget the hordes who travel down from Johannesburg, bringing their flash style, beautiful girls and boys and, of course, their much welcome spending power. With the passion for horse racing in the Western Cape, that area will, of course, be well represented as well.

Durban’s fashion scene has witnessed something of a revival in recent months . . . two notable shows being the successful 031 Collection and the recent show at Moyo, which showcased the finest designs and the best Durban has to offer in winter lifestyle living.

And they're off . . . the July start always gets engines revving

Some of the big names in the mix at this year’s July include Kathrin Kidger, Sibu Msimang, Pregasen Govender, David Tlale, Karen Monk Klijnstra, Gert-Johan Coetzee, Terrence Bray and Jean-Paul Botha. It’s hard to believe that folk will not be flitting around in the work of the likes of Gavin Rajah, Amanda Laird-Cherry and Craig Native as well.

The announcement of the final field and barrier draws for the field of 20 horses will take place on Wednesday, June 15 at which stage we’ll know a little more about where and when to have a little dash and a flutter. As usual there is a host of more experienced runners waiting in the wings plus some very exciting three-year-old who have entered the fray.

So it’s all beautifully set up for the big day, and it’ll be interesting to see which trainers come up with potential winners to challenge the mighty Mike de Kock.

Other than “What to wear darling?”, the other big question is, of course, where to party? Last year I took a little turn past the Miller tent, which was rather fab, if you’re looking for a rip roaring time with beautiful young folk, DJs and plenty of booze. In previous years it’s been the Vodacom hospitality tent or Peroni. Peroni was a highly stylish mod affair with wall to wall white Italian styling and, naturally, loads of Peroni.

Afterparty? The Official Durban July After Party

DJ Fresh's army of fans will be chuffed that he's performing at the official afterparty

Partygoers can expect two dance floors, the latest in lighting and stage design, monstrous sound systems and more than 50 uniquely outrageous on-screen displays and projections, which will accompany SA’s biggest and most talented DJs and performing artists.

Venue: The DLI Hall.
Who to expect? Roger Goode, DJ Fresh, Euphonik, Spindoctor. What more could you ask for?

Young Designer Award

Varsity, technikon and designs students exhibit their cutting edge sense of fashion, pushing the envelope and loving the unfettered freedom that this competition offers. With career-changing prizes on offer, and a national media platform to showcase their talent, the students dazzle and astound, often setting trends that reappear throughout the build-up to, and on the big raceday itself!

Fashion Challenge

So many big name designers first made their mark on this stage! This well established competition always attracts big name designers from around the country, while at the same time giving a chance to enthusiastic designers and fashionistas to show what they can do, and compete on an equal footing with some of the industry’s pacesetters!

Invited Designer Showcase

A highlight of the Vodacom Durban July. Eight handpicked designers, each one of them a household name in their own right, get to showcase a range in a non-competitive and glitzy show environment, featuring raceday ensembles, showstopper outfits and over-the-top hats. Catch these outfits being premiered at the Fashion Experience shows before the big day!
