The May 2013 recipient of the Highway Hero Award is the staff of the Wakaberry in Kloof. The staff at the Wakaberry enthusiastically received the award from Councillor Rick Crouch earlier this week.

On hearing of the fire at the Kloof and Highway SPCA the staff of the Kloof Wakaberry decided to donate the proceeds from their tips towards buying supplies for the SPCA. Wakaberry Kloof Directors matched their funds and purchased blankets, collars, leads and food for the SPCA.
“My WakaCrew are mainly students who use their wages to assist with their study programs. I was thrilled to see that they all have a great sense of community and assist where they can to promote wellness and benefit the community. We have a few more initiatives we are looking into at a local level, and I would like to thank my fabulous WakaCrew for being amazing individuals”, said Lizelle Blair Director, Wakaberry Kloof.
“It was my pleasure to present the award to the WakaCrew at the Wakaberry in Kloof. They are an inspiration to everyone and an example to their peers. If more people cared about the community they lived in we would be in much better shape” said Councillor Crouch.
Councillor Crouch encourages residents to take ownership of their community and says these tasks do not have to be major exercises, simply keeping the verges in the street on which you live neat when the municipality has not been around for a while, picking up the litter on the route you walk your dog daily.
