Prince William has revealed that the pressures of being a royal were what made him wait so long before asking commoner Kate Middleton to be his wife.
William said Kate’s situation was very different to that of his mother Diana when she married Charles in 1981, but that he felt it was only fair to wait to give Kate (known in the British press as Waity Katie) the “chance to back out if she wanted to”.
Wills said that he’d given Kate and her family the opportunity to understand what being part of the royal family was all about, so that she could pull out if she felt it was all too much.
It’s well documented that William’s mother Princess Diana had a difficult time integrating herself into the royal family and had at times felt desperately lonely being part of the royal setup. Her marriage to Charles ended in heartache and eventual tragedy.
Kate and William, however, have reportedly appeared composed and comfortable speaking to the media about the engagement.

William and Kate, both 28, met while studying at St. Andrews University in Scotland. William is a flight lieutenant in the Royal Air Force. According to the Sunday Times Rich List he is one of the world’s most eligible bachelors, with a fortune of 28 million pounds.
Bloomberg reports that Kate – baptized Catherine Elizabeth – is the eldest child of Michael and Carole Middleton, who own Party Pieces, a website supplying party accessories. Carole once worked as an airline cabin-crew member. After leaving university, Kate worked as a junior buyer for the women’s fashion chain Jigsaw and later took photographs for her parents’ website.
Why William waited so long for big announcement
There’s also much speculation about what title Kate will be given when she marries William. While she will be in line to be Queen of England one day, there’s questions over what immediate title she will assume. – Ridge Correspondent
