Not many employees can boast a 100% attendance record over a period of almost seven years. But Coffeeberry Café manager, Norman Khumalo, does, and that in spite of travelling to work daily on public transport from his home in Elandskop, a journey that takes him up to 90 minutes. Despite bus strikes, traffic delays, accidents and unfavourable weather conditions, Khumalo always reports for work on time, and more often than not, early. He has never, in almost seven years of employment, missed a single day of work and adding to this impressive track record, Khumalo also recently graduated from Unisa with a degree in Human Resource Management.
A true leader shows the way by example and Khumalo’s achievement is clearly inspiring his fellow team members. Over the past 12 months, 15 of the Coffeeberry Café’s 25 employees who have been working for more than a year, have achieved 100% attendance. Nombuso Ntisnani, Coffeeberry’s head barista, has achieved full attendance for four years in a row, and neither waitron, Nonhle Zulu, nor Gugu Mfungula, who is on the kitchen team, have missed a single day’s work in two years. Coffeeberry Café is also very proud of its staff retention record, with eight of the original 14 staff members who were employed when the business opened in 2005 still in their employ. A further four staff members have been with Coffeeberry for more than seven years.
