67 white doves and rousing performances by pupils of Howick Preparatory School were two of the highlights of a broadcast of East Coast Radio at The Mandela Capture Site on Friday 5 December.
Darren Maule and the East Coast Breakfast team did their show live from the site near Howick to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of our former President.
As the 6am to 9am broadcast rolled out, dozens of people began making their way to the site to remember one of the world’s most iconic leaders. The station’s social media pages, too, were filled with messages for the global icon as listeners shared their thoughts and experiences.
Madiba was passionately committed to making the world a better place for our children so it was fitting that little ones from the nearby Howick Preparatory School joined the team for the broadcast.
The overcast weather couldn’t dampen spirits as 60 voices from the school choir delivered two rousing performances – Bright Blue’s Weeping and Louis Armstrong’s classic It’s a Wonderful World.
Near the end of the show, the children joined Darren in releasing 67 white doves in honour of Nelson Mandela. Darren wrapped up the special broadcast saying, “Today is not a day of mourning. Today is a day of celebration of one of the greatest men to walk the face of this earth – Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela!”
