September 30, 2011. Varsity College raised more than R30 000 to assist the wonderful work the staff and volunteers of CHOC (Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa) continue to do in our communities.
The 2011 Varsity College CHOC Charity Challenge saw 100 golfers visiting the Beachwood Golf Club in Durban North to enjoy a fun afternoon of golf, with some wonderful prizes thrown into the mix. Some of the sought-after prizes included the Beast’s (Sharks prop forward Tendai Mtawarira’s) signed rugby jersey – raffled by Varsity College students on hole 2; weekends away and 2011 Springbok Rugby World Cup shirts and anoraks.
Although the wind, unfortunately, was not on their side, the golfers had an enjoyable day on the course.
Once all seven Varsity College campuses across the country have hosted their golf days, the money raised will be pooled and used to help relieve some of the finical burdens involved in the running of the CHOC lodges and houses. “These ensure that parents have a home away from home to be close to their children who are undergoing chemotherapy, radiation and other procedures,” said Agie Govender, divisional manager of CHOC, KwaZulu Natal.
