January 23, 2012. The crowd at the Australian Open tennis championships in Melbourne applauded Cypriot player Marcos Baghdatis during and after his amazing temper tantrum in Melbourne last week. Why? Because he showed how much passion he brings to the court, and because he is human, has his faults and weaknesses, unlike some of the machines who grind their way to untroubled win after win, tournament after tournament.
And probably, of course, because he was losing the match and the fans always back the underdog. Or maybe the Aussies just enjoy seeing some good racquet bashing.
Baghdatis was trailing Polish player Stanislas Wawrinka by two sets when he went to the chair to relieve some frustration … and then some. Four racquets gone!
