Boot camp on the Ridge

By The Ridge Magazine16/11/20103 Mins Read

We’ve all heard stories about the legendary boot camp training sessions that originated in the US, but quickly spread to SA. Although it’s been established for a long time in Cape Town and Joburg, the concept only fairly recently caught on in Durban.

Now Lee Ferreira, who’s scooped the franchise for Durban, says Boot Camp is coming to the north of the city in January. “I can confirm that early in January the Adventure Boot Camp concept will be coming to Durban North and to a venue in Umhlanga, but can’t yet confirm the exact venue,” said an excited Lee, who said the concept was catching on very well locally.

Brace yourself for a whole world of suffering and dedication – but take a look on the flip side . . . you could soon boast a brand spanking new body, and just in time for the late months of summer.

Lee is currently giving classes at the Durban Botanical Gardens for an hour, three days a week, including everything from yoga and Pilates to running and skipping. There are also established classes in Gillitts and Westville.

Boot Camp Umhlanga
It's all about hard work . . . but at the end of the day, it's worth the pain

While some have commented that they feel the Adventure Boot Camps are overly harsh, as Lee said, they really appreciate it when they see the benefits to mind and body . . . and many relish the opportunity to exercise and meet other people at the same time. Others thrive on the hard work dished out at the camps.

According to the Adventure Boot Camp website, exercise can include: “core conditioning, short distance running, muscular strength, jumping rope, circuit training, hiking, fitness kick boxing, Pilates, sports drills, obstacle courses, mat work, surprises and more! Exercises target specific areas that women need to work on. We make use of the natural environment and every day is different!”

What do you need? “An exercise mat, small hand weights (1.5kg – 3kg), a water bottle, running shoes, and a sense of adventure!”

Well, it all sounds rather exhausting . . . but if that’s what you’re after . . . or need . . . get hold of the Adventure Boot Camp folks, have no doubt, they’ll get your A into gear.
