Experience the thrill of the big five at Cheetah Ridge, a historically charming destination situated in the Nambiti Private Game Reserve

Story by Doody Adams

A 110-year-old fig tree plays centre stage to Cheetah Ridge Manor House and Bush Lodge, which was originally built in 1942 as a farmhouse, but over the years has been home to many and today is a luxurious bush getaway, boasting an old-school charm with a modern twist.

Set in the Nambiti Private Game Reserve, one can’t help but feel relaxed on arrival at Cheetah Ridge, and the anticipation of a big five sighting adds to the excitement.

Luxurious suites line the edge of a waterhole, offering expansive views across the bushveld. Decor is inspired by the bushveld, with neutral colours and soft tones of grey with natural wood creating a comfortable and luxurious setting. The slatted bamboo exterior of the 10 luxury suites adds an extra authentic bushveld experience. Air-conditioning and overhead fans were a cool comfort on a hot summer’s day, just as the fireplace would add a touch of romance and warmth on a cold evening. Each suite has its own outside elevated wooden deck with panoramic views of the reserve and a waterhole, an ideal spot for an afternoon of game viewing or simply relaxing with a book.

Large wooden fold-back doors make game viewing from the comfort of your king size bed or oversized bath an absolute treat – there’s nothing like spotting a herd of kudu while sipping on a drink as you soak in the bath! Africa at its best.

The highlight of your stay is the daily morning or evening game drive. All guests are treated to a trip in the open game-viewing vehicle, accompanied by an experienced and friendly game ranger. Their knowledge and expertise are not limited to game, but include birds, vegetation and small creatures. Majestic elephants, a lazy lion, the spring of the famous springbok, the rare sighting of the shy leopard or the endangered rhino – it is a privilege and rare opportunity to see these gracious animals in their natural habit.

The evening game drive is followed by a hearty three-course dinner served around a camp fire or, if the weather permits, under the grand old fig tree, lit up in all her glory. Lunch is a simple affair, served in the shade on the front lawn overlooking the reserve.

A tennis court and swimming pool will keep you busy between game drives, while the spa offers a good variety of treatments and the therapist certainly gives a good back rub.

The peace and quiet, complemented with kind and friendly staff, make this a memorable and relaxing getaway.

NAMBITI PRIVATE GAME RESERVE is a magnificent bush retreat and game conservancy that sprawls across 22 000 acres of pristine bushveld near Ladysmith. In addition to it being a malaria free, big five area, it boasts diverse game, several rare bird species and incredible biodiversity, with grasslands, savannah, thornveld and numerous tall acacia trees.
