Poor old Jacques Kallis, he’s hardly one to hog the limelight. In fact, he’s almost machine like and hasn’t appeared in the press for ages, other than for his Herculean achievements on the field.
But when he tapped his Audi R8 against the gates of a complex in Cape Town this week, it was gloves off and the media frenzy was on.
In the firing line were his controversial new hair-do (now that’s got tongues wagging), that racy sports car and several witty jokes about the wee scrape the other day. And, of course, the classic, “Jacques Car-less”.
Some of the Tweets going around: “Apparently the reason why Jacques Kallis wasn’t breathalyzed is because Herschelle Gibbs wasn’t in the car with him.”
“Jacques Kallis is a gate-crasher.”
“I think Jacques Kallis was busy combing his new hair when he crashed his fancy car…”
“The king of cricket Jacques Kallis is not the king of driving you just dont drive into a gate with your Audi R8 come on.”
You get the picture.
Oh, and did anybody remember that last week at Centurion South Africa’s record breaking Test batsman set a massive personal milestone in recording his first ever double century (he’s scored 38 centuries in 143 Tests, but this was his first double). Not so widely acknowledged on Twitter, surprise, surprise.
Of course, Jacques, in typical style, has remained fairly aloof of the whole saga and seems to be concentrating on the job at hand . . . beating the Indians at Kingsmead in the Test starting on Boxing Day.
