A platform for musical diversity

Destiny Music Academy is a music school operating in La Lucia with one of its key objectives being “to build community theatre by creating an all-inclusive performing arts platform for young performers of all ethnic groups and economic diversities”.

This is achieved through their “seasonal holiday development programmes and young performers projects” aimed at youngsters from the ages of 7-18 years old. Their holiday programme themed “Around the World” is running until July 9 and includes equipping workshops for the youth in singing, dance, drama, guitar, percussion and band dynamics. The programme will culminate in a show at Crawford College La Lucia on July 9.

Most of the students involved are very gifted in each discipline, but are seldom given the opportunity to be coached professionally and given the chance to perform, so they spend time with 11 coaches who specialise in voice, dance choreography, and music tuition, with the end goal being a live theatre production at the end of the 10-day holiday club.

This season’s cast includes three orphans from the LIV Childrens’ Village, as well as Wangu Village, up the North coast, and the majority of the cast hail from more than 15 different schools around the North Durban area. The theme of the showcase has a strong World Cup angle with key elements being tolerance and celebration of world cultures.
