This three-bedroom house was transformed into something truly special with the help of Mark and Michele Metior of M&M Designs. The brief from the owners was to create a house where they and their young family could really live – a nod to their active lifestyles and boundless energy.
With the family in mind, Mark and Michele took a careful look at detailing, keeping the basic framework neutral and using texture, rather than colour, to add interest. Spacious and uncluttered, understated styling makes for a calm environment. There are no ‘adult-only’ rooms, which means the house is really lived in.
All furniture and lighting has been customised to suit the space and the owners’ needs, with extensive use of South African designers, from Design Team fabrics on the wood and metal barstools to Haldane Martin pieces scattered around the house. These include the Weightless Round Barstools in the kitchen, the Fiela Feather Lamp in the formal lounge and the internationally-renowned Zulu Mama café chairs in the outdoor area.
To achieve a similar look in your own home, Mark and Michele recommend investing in good basics in a neutral colour palette. Couches and curtains should be long-lasting, while you can vary the look with wallpaper, scatter cushions and object, which require less cost and effort to change. Add interest with luxurious throws and thoughtful lighting. If there are children to consider, your choice of fabric is particularly important, so go for synthetic fibres that are easy to clean.
