On a day when South Africans traditionally wear bright colours to celebrate the coming of spring, rhino lovers are asking that we all wear black to show our sadness at the rapid depletion of the rhino population.
Poaching has had a disastrous toll in recent years, with the black rhino population now standing at just 2 300 animals in the wild – down 96% from the 65 000 noted in 1970. Last year, 333 rhinos were killed in South Africa and it looks like this year’s figures may exceed that. News of new rhino deaths has become a regular occurrence and it’s time for people to take a stand.
This spring day, as we enjoy the beautiful change of seasons, spare a thought for the animals that have been killed for their horns and show that you care.
