June 17, 2011. With the winter chill in the air, Samsung and Ikusasa School of Cooking teamed up last Saturday at the Samsung Store in Gateway to cook up a heart warming feast for their hungry audience.
The Ikusasa School of Cooking (Ikusasa meaning “tomorrow” or “hope” in Zulu) is a charity that opened in January 2010 and offers 10 disadvantaged school leavers, on a yearly basis, the opportunity to learn valuable and in-depth culinary skills in a one year programme. The students who come from children’s homes or disadvantaged families in and around the Durban area, are following a City and Guilds based skills programme, which is fully administered by The International Hotel School (IHS). This programme not only provides the students with the necessary theory and practical experience to work in the hospitality industry, but also with the strong likelihood that they will be placed in jobs on completion of the course.
Students from Ikusasa School of Cooking inspired the audience with a delicious Italian-influenced lunch; comprising roast tomato, beetroot and ciabatta salad and the ever popular homemade tagliatelle with arrabiata.
When asked about her experience cooking for a live audience, Princess Ngcobo, a student at the school said, “It was a great experience that gave us the platform to show off our skills and what we’ve learnt. Ikusasa School of Cooking has given me hope, not only for my family but also for my future”.
Lecturer at the school, Karen Henwood, added that she takes a huge amount of pride in her students’ achievements, as their determination to succeed in life provides inspiration to us all to give the less fortunate the chance to do the same.
