Curro Hillcrest’s much-awaited new campus is rapidly taking shape, bringing life to an inspired vision to develop passionate young people
Set on an elevated site overlooking Cotswold Downs, this value-driven private high school has been three years in the making, with 300 pupils already enrolled and eager to make their mark on the new campus. “It’s a huge vote of confidence that these pupils’ parents believe in our model so much so that they have stuck with us from the very beginning, without having seen a foundation dug for three years,” says Curro Hillcrest Executive Head Melville Temlett.
The school is the next phase of Curro Hillcrest Christian Academy, which has established itself as a popular choice for its high standards and great value – two campuses sharing facilities and an ethos of “Developing Greatness”.
Curro Hillcrest will be the flagship in the Curro group, which teaches 36 000 children across 42 sites in South Africa. “Curro have invested over R100-million to ensure we have everything we need,” Melville continues. This includes a 27-classroom academic block, an administration block, a 900-seater hall, and sports and cultural facilities to foster a wide range of talents.
“It’s unusual for a new school to get such extensive facilities from the beginning,” says Steve Cromie, Head of the High School. “Curro have really gone the extra mile!”
The school has partnered with professional sports coaches to enhance its pupils’ development. Facilities include an international-size astro, a 50m Olympic-size swimming pool, two sports fields, seven tennis courts (two under cover, serving as multi-purpose courts, and one synthetic clay court) and the hall converting to an indoor Sports Centre.
“We were fortunate to find an investor in Curro that specialises in education. They place great value in sound teaching methodology,” Steve explains. “The high school curriculum includes a broad range of subjects from Grade 10, working towards the IEB Matric exams. Maths, Science, IT and Business Studies have been identified as key subjects to help alleviate the country’s skills shortage, and there is scope to tailor subject packages to suit our learners.”
“We have worked hard to establish the things that really make a school, a school – including our school song and war cry – and our first classes are thrilled to be creating the traditions that will be followed for years to come,” Steve says. “You can feel the excitement rippling through the school!”
Curro Hillcrest will be completed this December and opens on January 13, 2016.
