Dr Raksha Takoordeen is a specialist paediatrician based at Mediclinic Hospital in Pietermaritzburg. She also has admitting rights at Midlands Medical Centre and Netcare St Annes Hospital. These hospitals admit from a wide drainage area in and around Pietermaritzburg and extend to the Midlands and Northern Natal areas.
Dr Takoordeen completed her medical degree at the University of Natal Medical School in 2002. She then proceeded to do her internship at the Tygerberg Hospital in the Western Cape, and community service at the Church of Scotland Hospital in Tugela Ferry. Dr Takoordeen joined the Department of Paediatrics at the Greys/Edendale Complex in Pietermaritzburg in 2005, progressing to the Durban complex in 2006 where she qualified as a specialist paediatrician in 2009. Subsequently, she joined the Paediatric Department at Greys Hospital. She ventured into Private Practice in 2010.
Her passions include newborn, especially premature births, allergies, ADHD, and paediatric cardiology – however, she is of the opinion that general child health and development is of paramount importance and will attend to any problem, acute or chronic relating to children. She also attends newborn deliveries, elective or emergency, in the abovementioned hospitals. She is affiliated to all medical aids and charges standard rates as per scheme rules.
She believes strongly in uplifting and supporting children’s’ organisations and is, therefore, actively involved in the medical care of the children at the Joseph Baynes Children’s Home affiliated to the Salvation Army. She also supports Save the Children, which is an international initiative dedicated to child protection, health, nutrition and education.
Her office is situated at Mediclinic Hospital, 90 Payn Street Pietermaritzburg. She consults during office hours but is also available for after-hours emergencies via the hospital casualties.
