Earth Day, celebrated annually 22 April, marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement nearly 50 years ago.
According to ‘World Scientist’s Warning to Humanity: A Second Notice’, human beings and the natural world are on a collision course. The paper puts forward a range of actions that can be taken by humanity to avert disaster. Connecting children to nature and exposing them to experiential environmental learning is the passion of a group of over 25 environmental educators from a range of environmental organisations.
This year marks the sixth anniversary of the Happy Earth Festival to be held in the beautiful KZN National Botanical Gardens, Pietermaritzburg on 19 and 20 April. Organised by the Happy Earth Environmental Education and Sustainability Forum, this event aims to host 1750 learners, many of whom are children from disadvantaged rural and township schools and are in need of funding assistance for transport and snacks.
Celebrate Earth Day this year by helping to create awareness of the natural environment and our human responsibilities towards it, by sponsoring a child for R100 to attend the festival. These direct experiences in nature, under the guidance of positive mentorship, are cited as the single biggest contributor leading to positive environmental behaviour and future environmental leadership. As the world goes dark for Earth Day 2018, you can ignite a love for our natural world in the heart of a child, and help light the pathway that will lead us all into the right relationship with the Earth.
