Janet Sawkins started out as a nursing sister, but when she turned 40 she felt she needed change. Always having enjoyed baking and cooking, she signed up at the Christina Martin school in 2002 and it all fell into place from there. After studying and working at the school for a couple of years, Janet started a business from home together with Helen Michaelides. Madeleines grew rapidly, and four years ago opened its doors at Oxford Village. “We did classes and courses at first, but the coffee shop took off so we shifted the focus to just that,” says Janet, who also does catering and corporate gifting. The selection of mouth-watering treats is without a doubt one of the best in the area, so pop in for a piece of cake with coffee, or delicious breakfast and lunch.

Deeghuys
Deeghuys started in the Western Cape, and over the years has established a national footprint. The first Deeghuys store in KZN opened in Hillcrest earlier this year and makes home baking super easy and enjoyable for the whole family. Ninety percent of their products are sold frozen, giving you the option to either bake at home or at your holiday destination. There’s a wide range available – including breads, rolls, croissants, pies, pizza bases, sweet pastries, muffin batters, biscuits and rusks, frozen meals and birthday cake bases. Lindt Chocolate Boutique
Durban’s second Lindt store has opened its doors at The Pavilion, the first one being at Gateway, and this is without a doubt the perfect place to do your Christmas shopping.
