Girls Wanna Rock, which is on at The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway from May 31 to July 10, boasts all out rock and roll sexiness – the show features a scorching hot all-girl cast who will ignite the stage, shatter guitars and get you rocking in no time.
Five alluring front singers and a six-piece band pay tribute to the rock chicks of today, the pop sounds of the 80s, disco divas of the 70s and the flower children of the 60s.
The show is hosted by the unexpected . . . a man, or to be more precise, the talented, good looking and charming Jonothan Didlick, who will have the girls in the audience screaming for more! He plays a multitude of roles from the man in uniform, to the beach lifesaver, the crooner, the 50s rock ’n roller, the 60s hippie, the disco dancer, the 80s nerd and, of course, the hip hop rapping cool dude!
The show features seven decades of music starting in the 1940s with post-war songs like Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy and swiftly moves on to the 50s icons like Marilyn Monroe, Patsy Cline, Nina Simone, Wanda Jackson and Nancy Sinatra. The girls want to get married and they are Going To The Chapel to Feel Like A Natural Woman, and then when things get rough they feel like a Chain Of Fools and also command some Respect. The new-age girls also head to the workplace with Nine To Five by Dolly Parton and Honey I’m Home by Shania Twain.
Girls Wanna Rock is also about fun when the girls head to the beach and party with songs like Party Time by Gloria Estefan and California Girls by Katy Perry. The icons of the 70s and 80s are saluted with a mind-blowing tribute to Cyndi Lauper, Annie Lennox, Madonna, Cher, Whitney Houston and let’s not forget Tina Turner.

In the second half the audience experiences a blondes-have-more-fun tribute to Madonna, Christina Auguilera and Britney Spears. Then it’s time for a soaring ballad, when the girls pay tribute to Mariah Carey. Just when you thought it could not get hotter it’s the turn of the phenomenal Lady Gaga, who dominates with Bad Romance and Poker Face. We also feature the softer side of women with The First Cut Is The Deepest by Sheryl Crow and Hand In My Pocket by Alanis Morissette. The current day girl divas are saluted with a rocking medley of hits by Pink, Beyonce, Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry, Avril Lavigne, Amy Winehouse and Anastacia.
Homegrown girls haven’t been forgotten, however, as the show gets into the South African groove with a tribute to Brenda Fassie, and builds to a climax with Shakira and Freshlyground’s Waka Waka. Girls Wanna Rock is the ultimate party with a song list that will appeal to every generation and will take the audience and the girls on a musical journey that they will never forget!
Besides the thorn-among-the-roses in the form of Jonothan Didlick as host, the all-girl cast is made up of Adri Britz, Crystal Worship, Talana Jansen van Vuuren, Antoinette Moolman, Samantha Tirivacho and Liezel Pieters (also on guitar) on vocals. The band features Jani Faure (guitar), Calli Thomson (keyboards), Kelly Joubert (bass guitar) , Roxy Pursey (drums) and Kirsty Madgin (saxophone).
