Heartbreak for Lloyd

By The Ridge Magazine03/11/20101 Min Read

Durbanites were largely united in the opinion that L’loyd Cele would become the next Idol but tasted disappointed when talented husband and father Elvis Blue walked away with the most votes and the title.

What do you think? Did Elvis Blue deserve to win?

Dstv said that a total of 2 398 962 valid votes were cast between the broadcast of the Top 2 Spectacular on Sunday, and Monday evening (November 1) at 10pm, when voting for the show closed.

Elvis Blue
(from George in the Cape) walked away with the viewers’ votes . . . and the title and main prizes, which included:

  • A brand new Ford Figo
  • R500 000  in cash
  • A Samsung home theatre system and DVD player
  • Musical equipment and vouchers for Yamaha equipment
  • R20 000 fashion vouchers from Truworths

About L’loyd Cele

In an extraordinary gesture of friendship, Elvis and L’loyd decided before the final show that they would share the cash prize from M-Net and Ford, so runner-up L’loyd also took home R250 000 in cash.

I liked both L’loyd and Elvis Blue – they were both amazing performers, and I actually voted for both of them each week!

I was happy with the outcome – I think Elvis did have a slight edge on L’loyd. But in the end they are both winners. Even though L’loyd didn’t take home the title, the runner-ups usually go forward and make bigger successes of themselves – just look at Adam Lambert and Chris Daughtry.

It seems L’loyd has a very broad fan base which augers well for his future.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t follow Idols this year until the final two. When I saw Elvis Blue audition this year I said that he would win (very similar to Jason’s audition last year). L’loyd was also incredible and I wish them both the very best for the future. The gesture of sharing the cash prize, who ever won, was monumental, and testament to what great guys they both are! Can’t wait to hear their songs on the radio!

I think Lloyd gave it horns, you could see his 150% committment shine through in his eyes, and wow what a performer and fabulous fan base (he’s a Durbanite, what do you expect!). But by the same token, Elvis was consistent and also hugely talented. I was punting for Lloyd, but have to admit that Elvis had the edge on Lloyd in the final duet.

Good on both of them for agreeing to share the prize, that’s the spirit of the programme. Leaves an ‘aaahhhhh’ feeling and a lump in my throat 🙂
