The October 2012 recipient of the Highway Hero Award is Captain Bheki Mpungose, the station commander of the Kloof SAPS station. Captain Mpungose graciously received the award from Councillor Rick Crouch earlier this week.

In a recent incident, Captain Mpungose noticed something out of order at a house while patrolling down Krantzview Road in Kloof. As he drove down the driveway through the open gate he started taking fire from from one or more suspects that were in the process of robbing the house. Captain Mpungose returned fire and the suspects fled, hopping the walls from property to property.
“Captain Bheki is a very proactive station commander,” said Councillor Crouch. “He is a policeman that really loves his job. He is s role model to anyone considering a career in law enforcement.
It was my pleasure to present the award to Captain Bheki. He is very deserving of this award as he goes above and beyond for the community he serves. If they had recruiting posters for SAPS, Captain Bheki’s picture should be front and centre on that poster. Kloof is a safer place because of Captain Bheki and I thank him for the work done by him and his team at Kloof SAPS station. He is a true hero,” said Councillor Crouch.
The “Highway Hero” award will be presented once a month to a resident, business owner or municipal or government employee in the Ward 10 area who goes the extra mile for the community. Cllr Crouch says he initiated the project “because there are so many people who selflessly give their time and resources to the community. These people are seldom thanked for this task and whilst it is but a small gesture to acknowledge what these people do, it will hopefully encourage others to do the same.”
