Babies only start to regulate their own temperature between two and three months, so it’s important to dress your newborn appropriately. But what is appropriate when the weather is all a bit muddled up (kind of like your new babies sleep patterns!) We’ve gathered these tips on how to dress your baby when it’s not too cold but not exactly warm either…
To start, it’s all about quality
Newborn skin is sensitive, so dress your newborn in natural, organic fabrics that won’t irritate the skin. Cotton is the best fabric for babies as it is super soft, breathable but also highly absorbent. So make sure you dress baby in 100% cotton.
Layer it up
When the mornings are a bit chilly, but the days are warm, layering baby is the way to go. We like to put baby in a long sleeve vest first and then a babygro on top. Again, all in natural 100% cotton fabrics. If you are heading outside in the morning you can layer baby with a cardigan and pants. A hat or beanie is also a must. As the temperatures heat up, simply peel off a layer.
Blankets count as a layer
If your newborn kicks up a fuss getting changed (which, let’s be honest, most do) then don’t forget that blankets count as a layer. A soft 100% cotton blanket or muslin can be very comfortable for baby.
What’s the deal with polar fleece?
You can dress your baby in polar fleece or wrap them in a polar fleece blanket when the temperature is very cold – but limit this to the daytime when baby is awake. Don’t put the baby in their cot to sleep in this material as it is synthetic. Synthetic materials are not breathable, so you can risk baby overheating, which scarily enough can lead to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
Remember the general rule
Overall, remember the general rule for dressing baby – whatever you are wearing add an additional layer for baby. So if you are wearing jeans and a t-shirt, baby can be in a vest and babygro. If you are wearing a jersey over your shirt, then cover baby in a blanket.
It doesn’t have to be expensive
Dressing baby in natural, organic materials like cotton doesn’t mean breaking the bank. There are plenty of other things your baby will need that will deplete any money you had!
