The new quake came as sombre ceremonies were planned to mark one month passing since the tsunami tragedy and it could have catastrophic ramifications for the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant.
It seems the Fukushima nuclear plant has withstood the initial impact of the latest massive aftershock, but officials have raised the alert around the Fukushima nuclear threat to the highest level, while extending the evacuation zone. A fire broke out this morning but was brought under control within minutes.

Monday’s aftershock cut off external power supply to three reactors, halting injection of water into units No. 1, 2 and 3, a spokesman for Tokyo Electric said in a televised briefing.
