March 7, 2012: A conversation I heard on radio the other day while driving home got me to thinking, “Just how boring am I?”. The radio hosts were talking about routines in the evening, how changeable, or alternatively, how dreadfully monotonous our lives can be.
So I took a little gander at my own situation and asked the honest question, how boring am I? A nagging thought in the back of my mind was that if I am horribly boring, then my poor wife has to put up with it.

After careful analysis, I happily came to the conclusion that I live a rather full and varied life, the evenings punctuated with various work responsibilities, my passion for football (enjoying social and club soccer twice a week) and, yes, the odd recreational or visit to the local pub (you bet!). There’s also the odd trail run thrown in here and there.
Once I’m behind closed doors in the evening, however, it can all get a bit samey. Now I’m not going to go into what goes on in the bedroom (that’s all off limits), but I must admit a tendency towards a good read and a glass of brandy in my favourite chair in the evening. My partner does most of the cooking, but once or twice a week I get stuck in to help or even cook the whole bang shoot.
Bath v shower, pyjamas v shorts and T-shirt, tea v coffee, these things are not set and change from day to day, so I avoid a boring score there.
We’re often found sitting on the couch, dogs at our feet, reading a good book, the old Kindle or discussing the issues of the day (TV doesn’t get much of a look-in, unless it’s sport, or a good documentary).
At least in summer we might sit outside and enjoy a braai, but come the end of March we’ll probably be cocooned inside with our dogs on the couch.
Yes, a little boring, you’re probably saying … but hey, I’ll take it any day. – Garth Johnstone

Mmmm…got me thinking as well. Everyone has routine in their lives, and it’s this routine that tends to make your life mundane and boring. Routine isn’t necessarily out of choice, but rather because of responsibilities, family commitments, etc — especially if you have children. But isn’t this the circle of life? Monday to Friday we drop the kids at school, go to work, go to gym, cook supper, have a glass of wine, check homework, read, watch TV, and have the occasional mid-week outing. Come the weekend our routine changes — to a weekend routine. I’m happy with my routine. Boring? Perhaps a little, but then I’m in control of it and can rev it up anytime I want.
Thanks Boring …I’m in your camp, a little boring isn’t necessarily a bad thing. As long as it’s not all work …
Ok, so I’m looking at my perspective on day-to-day goings on and can also say, yes, perhaps slightly borderline boring, but the presence of an almost two year old can change all that! Never a dull moment when trying to stop her from eating the dog’s food, or watering the plants using her juice bottle. Brings many a frustration sometimes but the laughs and giggles way outnumber the rest!
But this article definitely offers food for thought – thanks for sharing Garth!
Sharing is caring dude.
I hear where you’re coming from, but honestly, I don’t seem to have time to do the same thing every day. I fit in as much as I can and embrace those moments when you can just go ‘aah’, have a glass of wine on the verandah and soak it all in. Great blog!
