Lenmed Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre: Paediatric and Newborn Care

By Mums Mail Magazine08/11/20173 Mins Read

Lenmed Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre’s (LEHHC) paediatric facility is an intimate 20-bedded ward designed to create a welcoming and friendly environment for younger patients. The staff are highly trained paediatric nurses who provide the special level of care that babies and children require. The ward can accommodate newborns, babies and children up to early adolescent years. Isolation wards are available for the children’s protection. In addition, the hospital has paediatric intensive care facilities and neonatal intensive care facility for premature and ill newborns.

The décor, play areas and furnishings are designed to create a warm and comforting atmosphere. The carers are experts at reassuring children and distracting them while they undergo treatment or investigation. They encourage parents to spend as much time as possible with their children, particularly nursing mothers. Room-in facilities for parents are available for this purpose. LEHHC utilises the latest technology for the care and treatment of paediatric patients. Equipment in the wards and ICUs is world-class and the digital hospital allows doctors in their rooms (or at home) to view test results moments after they have been performed. This allows for rapid treatment decisions; a critical component of effective paediatric care.

LEHHC has a unique multidisciplinary 13-member paediatric team representing 10 specialist disciplines: Paediatric Cardiologist, Paediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Paediatric Endocrinologist , General Paediatricians, Paediatric General Surgeon, Paediatric Haematologists, Paediatric Nephrologist, Paediatric Neurologists, Paediatric Genetics and a Paediatric Pulmonologist.

In addition, LEHHC is the only hospital in KZN to offer paediatric cardiac surgery, and is unique in that they have a 13-member team of 10 paediatric sub-disciplines at one private hospital. They also have numerous accolades; including being a Heart, Stroke and Renal Dialysis Centre of Excellence, offering a holistic range of medical disciplines with advanced medical technology and equipment, complimented by an experienced team of specialists, nursing staff and support services – including a 24-hour emergency service.

LEHHC was the only private hospital in KwaZulu-Natal to have been selected to take part in a nationally driven stroke simulation (dummy patient run) project coordinated by Angels South Africa in conjunction with Boehringer Ingelheim Global Office and Angels Europe. The entire simulation was recorded on a Go-Pro camera, which was later evaluated. According to feedback received from Angels Consultants, this simulation was a huge success, with the ‘door to needle’ time being 30 minutes and 10 seconds.

Niresh Bechan said; “Our stroke teams are well trained and experienced with dealing with stroke emergencies. Although the simulation was almost half the expected ‘door to needle’ time of 60 minutes, we have on record the ‘door to needle’ time of 16 minutes in respect of an actual case.”
