Since 1917, local Lions clubs have given ordinary men and women the opportunity to do extraordinary things by giving back to their community. Today, with nearly 1.5 million men and women in more than 200 countries and geographic areas, Lions are one of the largest service organisations in the world. The organisation’s motto lived each day by members is “We Serve.”
Club members volunteer their skills, time and efforts to provide selfless, effective community service to answer the needs that challenge communities while having fun and building lifelong relationships.
Lions have had their paw prints on Southern African soil since 1957 and have been working in our communities since then – these are ordinary people making an extraordinary difference every day. District 410C is made up of clubs throughout KZN, the Free State and Kimberley.
As at 20 September 2018, the District has reported a total number of 7500 people served through various service projects since 1 July 2018. The Lions’ pillars of service are Food Security, Diabetes, Environment, Childhood Cancer and Vision or Sight. Many clubs assist members of the community with food parcels or feeding schemes at schools and other organisations in need. Diabetes screenings are hosted regularly by clubs and the district hosts an annual camp for children living with diabetes. Environmental projects include recycling, tree planting (Lions International world-wide planted 9.7 million trees in a project in 2012) and environmental clean-ups such as International Coastal Clean-Up day. A new focus for Lions is for assistance and support for children and their families affected by childhood cancer.
Since 1925 Lions have been “the Knights of the Blind” at the behest of Helen Keller. Through a fantastic new vision screener and in partnership with local optometrists and Operation Bright Sight; Lions are bringing sight to the less fortunate – this makes a world of difference to school children.
The most famous Lion, Melvin Mascott, is often seen at various events around the country and is loved by everyone. Melvin is always happy to stop for a hug, high-five or photo with his many friends. You can follow Melvin Mascott on Facebook.

Their many fundraising projects assist them to make this difference possible. One of their national fundraising projects is the well-recognised Lions Christmas Cake, available annually from your local club.
The delicious 1kg Lions Christmas cakes are now available. They’ve been carefully baked to the magical, tried and trusted recipe that has been used for many years, so you can be sure of their quality and taste.
The recommended selling price in 2018 is R110 for a 1kg un-iced Christmas fruit cake, which contains no alcohol. As with all funds raised by any Lions club, all the proceeds of the sale of Lions Christmas cakes will be used directly for charitable projects.
