Following the successful premiere of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom in Rosebank, Johannesburg, the film premiered in Durban at Gateway in November.
The movie is the official adaption of Nelson Mandela’s autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom.
The epic motion picture spans Madiba’s extraordinary life. Beginning in 1924, it follows Madiba from his early childhood in a rural village, through to his inauguration as the first democratically elected president of South Africa.
Director Justin Chadwick had the gruelling task of creatively translating the moments of Mandela’s life into a cinematic experience. The film was produced by Durban-based SA producer, Anant Singh.
South Africa’s local talent shone brightly, with Terry Pheto (Winnie Mandela), Atandwa Kani (teenage Mandela), Tony Kgoroge (Walter Sisulu), Deon Lotz (Kobie Coetsee), Zolani Mkiva (Raymond Mhlaba) and Riaad Moosa (Ahmed Kathrada) all putting in spectacular performances.
Amongst the over 750 guests attending the Durban Premiere on Tuesday night, were the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Mr Edward Senzo Mchunu; the Ministry of Human Settlements, Ramesh Harcharan; Durban Mayor, Hon James Nxumalo; the Mayor’s Speaker, Logie Naidoo; US Consulate, Taylor Ruggles; and CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Sello Hattang as well as a host of media guests.
Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom will be released in cinemas throughout South Africa on 28 November 2013.
