The Ridge Online headed to Ushaka Marine World to try the Discovery Scuba Experience.
An absolute novice when it comes to diving – a little snorkeling perhaps, but zero scuba experience – The Ridge’s Garth Johnstone was a tad wary of getting his feet wet.
But when his brother Rhys came to town for the weekend, and mentioned a refresher course at Ushaka, it sounded like a good idea… especially when it was discovered that after a shortish briefing and explanation of the safety aspects we could plunge in and take a dive in the reef fish tank at the Ushaka Lagoon.
The team at Calypso Dive and Adventure Centre took us through the technical and safety aspects and then it was into the lagoon water with our instructor. After an anxious start we quickly got the hang of it and descended into a beautiful, colourful and yes, slightly alien world. It was a wonderful experience, as we swam among the gorgeous sea life… hopefully without terrifying the fish or the happy families looking on from the aquarium.
And by the way, Durban’s beachfront was abuzz with activity this weekend: surfers (not so many because of the sardines), walkers, bikers, families having a lazy walk and a meal, those recovering from the party the night before, Durban is obviously still basking in the Post World Cup glow.
