Moses Mabhida Stadium Entertainment

By Mums Mail Magazine05/11/20132 Mins Read

The iconic Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban is so much more than the impressive-looking sports venue it was built to be. It is a spectacular and proudly South African entertainment venue that has so much to offer. It is a tourist attraction in its own right. The popular SkyCar is a funicular that takes two to three minutes to reach the SkyPlatform where visitors can enjoy breath taking views of the Durban coastline. The SkyCar runs along the length of the north arch of the stadium from the lower station to the upper station at the SkyPlatform. Glass windows all the way round make viewing Durban an absolute pleasure. For those who need more adrenaline in their activities they can try the Big Rush Big Swing – the world’s only stadium swing and the largest swing of any kind, anywhere in the world as confirmed by the Guinness Book of Records in May 2011. Jump into the void 106 metres above the pitch and swing out in a huge 220m arc under the stadium arch.

Fun for everyone is on offer with Segway Gliding Tours. Glide around the stadium and along the beachfront led by a well-trained tour guide and enjoy Durban while effortlessly operating a Segway. If you’re up for something more adventurous then try out the Adventure Walk, a 500-step walk up the southern side of the 106-metre stadium arch to the SkyPlatform. The 360o view of Durban is worth the effort. And for something more cerebral go behind the scenes on an all-access or express tour of the stadium and get to see state-of-the-art changerooms, artworks, banqueting facilities, and the hallowed 2010 World Cup Semi-final venue pitch.

People’s Park Café is Durban’s newest café for the health conscious with a touch of decadence. Located in the People’s Park adjacent to the stadium, this café is next to a safe children’s play area with swings, slides and so much more. The People’s Park area is also open to cyclists, joggers, and roller bladders, just to name a few. It is definitely a place to visit for a family fun-filled day!
