As we approach the Matric final examinations, along with final school terms, I am starting to see an increase in stress and anxiety, related to preparing and writing the final exams – which are less than a month away as I write this.
There have been countless articles about some of the mainstream things to do. With this in mind I thought it beneficial to give you, the student, something a bit further from the beaten path.
Breathe, just breathe
If you ever feel overwhelmed, anxious or stressed, chances are strong that your breath is shallow and fast which activates “fight or flight” response. I’ll stay away from the actual science behind this, however an easy and powerful technique to achieve a state of calm is to close your eyes, sit up straight and then channel your breath as deeply into your belly as you can whilst also deliberately slowing it down. Try 10 deep breathes and do more if needed. Do this at any time, whilst studying, before an exam, during an exam or at any other stressful time.
Cultivate a mindfulness practice
A mindfulness practice is used to develop present state awareness and focus. It is also great for reducing stress and anxiety, as well as promoting calmness. There are many meditation apps out there and some options here are Headspace, Insight Timer and Calm. These are guided meditations for students – my preference is Insight Timer since it is free.
Focus can also be achieved doing mindful movements such as Tai Chi, Chi Gong or Yoga.
Listen to the Tim Ferriss podcast on learning
You may have not heard of Tim, however, he has a proven track record of optimising learning dynamics. Listen to his podcast, summarise and then apply! It could make all the difference and believe me, it works.
Try these three things and stick with them. These are proven to work in reducing anxiety and stress, as well as enhancing resilience and performance under pressure.
I wish you all the best in your exams. Your time is now!
