The installation of spot-lights and up-lighters at the base of the trees on Umhlanga’s Village Green have brought colour to the space and have allowed the UIP to use pink lighting to mark breast cancer awareness month.
In 2012, the Umhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) installed plug points at the base of each tree on the Village Green in preparation for the Festive lighting project. With the project set to run each year, these points were made permanent and it was then decided to make use of them all year round.
“With the plug points in place, we decided to make good use of them and install lighting on the green that would help with security on one hand and give us the opportunity to play with colour on the other,” explains UIP project leader Brian Wright.
To this end, four spotlights were installed below the large trees shining up and eight colour-changing up-lighters were installed at the base of the palms.
“We can change the colour of the lights as often as we like and will be using them to mark special days like pink for cancer awareness this month and red for Valentine’s Day. It is a small but fun way to bring life to the green and Umhlanga,” said Brian.
