Remo’s on the Village rocks Umhlanga

By The Ridge Magazine10/10/20122 Mins Read

The hottest spot in town is officially open and it is great.  I have now had coffee, lunch and dinner, and the place has been packed.  It is beautiful, all red leather banquettes, steel and glass.  The mirroring behind the bar is a Parisian delight, as is the dark wood throughout.

One of the many culinary strengths of Remos on the Village is the daily special, which is authentic, slow cooked and delicious.  There is a different one every day of the week, and they are succulent and full of flavour.  For me nothing beats a home cooked shepherd’s pie, or slow cooked short rib on the bone…..

A lot of thought has gone into the wine list, and it is balanced with the usual suspects, and a few very special bottles that you won’t see every day, if at all in Durban.   Renzo Scribante has chosen a Laibach Friedrich 2008, and an imported Vietti Barbera 2008 from Piemonte among others, following his Italian roots, with a good selection of magnums.  It is so good to see a restaurant putting thought into their cellar, well overdue.

The latest Remos venue is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner six days a week, and only closes on Sunday evenings.  The outside courtyard features a fountain with running water, and it is hard to believe you are so close to the Umhlanga boulevard.  Entering through the side, next to the exquisite deli, you can smell the bread and meatballs before you enter this little piece of Europe in the heart of the Village.

I can say with complete certainty that from the mosaic floor, to the imported bar this place is going to be a hit.  Roll on summer.
