A flight was undertaken to Hole in the Wall on the Eastern Cape coast this morning, 20 June 2012.
Observations of sardine associated predators were very disappointing and the only significant activity was found between Mboyti and Port St Johns about 6-8kms offshore. This activity consisted of small groups of Cape Gannets some of which were engaged in what appeared to be search diving rather than concentrated feeding diving. Common dolphins are still milling in this area however these animals do not appear to be feeding with any determination. About 500 bottlenose dolphins were seen close inshore at Mgazanna south of Port St Johns.
Although disappointing, sardine runs have often taken place during early July in previous years so we are still positive that the “greatest shoal on earth” will eventually arrive on the KZN coast.
Due to the lack of sardine related activity, shark safety gear has been replaced at a number of Hibiscus Coast beaches and visitors are advised to consult with local lifeguards regarding bathing at the beach they visit. KZNSB staff are on standby in case it is necessary to remove the shark safety gear at short notice.
A flight is scheduled for next week to see if there are any changes in the sardine activity.
